From the region of Kashmir comes this lovely set of hand-painted coasters. Each set contains 6 papier-mâché, cloth-backed coasters in a matching box that keeps them beautifully contained while not in use. Looks terrific on the coffee table. Made by a cooperative of artisans these durable coasters are handcrafted out of papier-mâché, a craft that has been part of Kashmiri culture since the 15th century despite years of conflict and economic struggle. The surface of each coaster and case is coated with glue, burnished smooth, and layered with tissue paper. Then everything is entirely hand-painted, a process called naqashi. Finally, lacquer is applied to seal each surface.
